The Lim Ket Kai Atrium was loaded with STI students from various branches within the cluster at February 21st, Friday, for the 19th National Youth Convention with the theme, “Social Media & Me: Discover the real life impact of every like, share and post”. Other than the host school which is STI Cagayan de Oro, which also served as the organizers, this year’s delegates from the said convention came from STI Iligan, STI Dipolog, STI Malaybalay, and STI Valencia.
Unlike the convention that was held at the Aliw Theatre, this event was comprised of only three speakers: Mr. Spanky Enriquez discussed the “Do’s and Don’ts in Social Media”.
Mr. Sonnie Santos, a prominent advocate on Cyberbullying, pointed out that importance of every content we post and share online, as well as cyberbullying being a double bladed sword – it is both beneficial and dangerous.
The last speaker, Mr. Ricky Bunag, delivered relevant information for graduating students which consisted mostly on tips and guidelines in landing for a job.
Mr. Spanky’s discussion was the best one – it was full of thrilling humor that could definitely draw the audience towards his topic. He opened every listeners’ mind of the effects as well as the consequences of Social Media, though he labelled it as “changing in the speed of light”. He also pointed out that every post should be relevant, hashtags should be used to help add information to those who are searching for it; and that we should be extra careful in sharing information with the use of these networking technologies. Cyberbullying was Mr Sonnie’s topic, and clarified that bullying will not exist without anybody encouraging. By “encouraging”, it represents the people who laugh at the bullied. Lastly, Mr. Ricky inspired the graduating students that every person’s “uniqueness” is important in building the key qualities in being consistent for every field of expertise.
For the eighth consecutive year I had been attending this convention, I can proudly say that this year’s convention was the best. Despite the lack of games and prizes, as well as the raffle entries and celebrity guests, the topics were useful since we are now living in the age of computers and artificial intelligence, especially with Mr. Spanky’s discussion.
